Old Corbitt Road Bridge (BR 1-444)

Project Name:

BR 1-444 on N424 Old Corbitt Road, East of Odessa

Project Limits:

400 feet north and south of bridge

Project Need:

BR 1-444 was initiated through the New Castle Conservation District in an effort to raise the road above the high tide. The current roadway is sinking due to the highly compressible soils below grade. Currently, the high tide overtops the road twice a day, often making the road impassable.

Project Overview

This project involves the construction of a 250 foot causeway over the portion of the roadway that is sinking while raising the profile above the tidal elevation. The causeway will consist of concrete box beams on piles. The roadway approaches will be reconstructed and guardrail will be installed as needed. Riprap will be placed in the stream to protect the structure from scour.

Project Timeline

Design Phase:

  • Design to be completed in December 2012.

Construction Phase:

  • Construction to begin in July 2013 and should last approximately 6 months.
*Schedule subject to available funding.
