TRAFFIC ALERT - Route 4 Rehabilitation Project to Begin on Sunday, November 23


Impacts will require Overnight Ramp Closures; Nighttime and Daytime Lane Closures

Newark -- The Department of Transportation (DelDOT) announces the Route 4 rehabilitation project will begin on Sunday, November 23. The rehabilitation work will consist of milling, patching, hot-mix overlay, curb ramp improvements to meet compliance regulations with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), installation of sidewalks, replacement of signals, and detection loops.

A-Del Construction Company of Newark in Delaware was the lowest of six bids, submitting a bid of $2,428,912.11. The work will be completed within 120 calendar days, pending weather.

This project will impact these locations with the following dates:

Sunday, November 23 through Wednesday, November 26 from 7:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., pending weather

*Closure of off ramp from Route 4 eastbound to Route 273 eastbound

Detour Route: Left turn at signal for Salem Church Road prior to eastbound Route 273 ramp

*Closure of off ramp from Route 273 westbound to Route 4 westbound

Detour Route: Bear to right prior to Route 4 ramp (Cedar Road Exit Ramp), turn left at traffic signal.

All detour routes will be posted for motorists.

Sunday, November 30 through March 2009, pending weather

Construction hours: Sunday through Thursday from 7:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Friday and Saturday may be used for make-up days. In addition to save time, the contractor will also work Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; weekends may be used for make-up days.

*Route 4/Ogletown Road eastbound and westbound from Salem Church Road to Route 7

Signalized intersections:
*Route 4 at Salem Church Road
*Route 4 at Route 273 off-ramps
*Route 4 at Allendale Apartments/Prides Crossing
*Route 4 at Harmony Road
*Route 4 at Somerset Drive
*Route 4 at Christiana Drive/Hygeia Drive
*Route 4 at Churchmans Road/Delaware Park Boulevard

No work will be permitted on the following holidays:

*Thanksgiving - November 26 through November 30
*Christmas - December 24 through December 28
*New Years - December 31 through January 4

Message boards are in place along Route 4 alerting motorists of the upcoming construction. Motorists are advised to drive with caution, slow down in work zones, and expect delays.
